Why You're Getting Spots

There are a few things I've learnt in the past year about how to take better care of my skin. These have worked for me, however, everyone has different types of skin so this advice may not work for you. I just wanted to share a few of my experiences...

Wash your makeup brushes

I think we've all been guilty of not washing our make-up brushes regularly enough. I try to do mine every weekend, I usually end up doing it every other weekend. But when I do it and see the amount of product that comes off, it really shows that you need to keep your brushes clean. Not only does it keep them in good condition, but you could be rubbing bacteria into your skin from up to two weeks ago, no wonder we get break outs!

Exfoliating isn't always good

Obviously exfoliating your skin is great and there are so many benefits too it. However, if you do it too often or use a harsh exfoliator it can cause more damage than good. Your face is pretty sensitive and harsh exfoliation can cause it to become dry or break out. If you have particularly sensitive skin, use a gentle exfoliator or exfoliate less often.

Too many cleansers

Some people think that the only way to get rid of spots is to use a ton of cleansers and miracle creams. Sometimes I find these actually cause me to break out in more spots. I feel like I'm clogging up my pores with all this product. I usually have a couple of make up free days and use minimal product, most of the time my spots will disappear this way.

Liquid make-up

My skin is not a fan of liquid makeup. If I wear it too often I am bound to get a cluster of spots in my T-zone. To combat this I will always use a primer as some sort of base (I don't know if this helps but I like to think so), I also wear liquid make-up as little as possible. On a regular day I like to keep it minimal and usually just a bit of powder and blush on my skin, I find this really keeps my spots at bay.

Your diet

Your diet is obviously massively important. Not only does cutting down on sugar and artificial flavours help, but drink as much water as you can! It always does wonders for my skin.

Always, always, always remove your make-up before bed

Every time I'm too drunk/tired/forget to take off my make up, I regret it the next day. My skin feels horrible and unclean in the morning and there will be new spots popping up for the next few days. Just take your make-up off before you go to sleep, your skin will love you for it.

Do you have any tips for clear skin?

  2. OMG I should've seen this sooner. I have a lot of pimples right now and I don't know if it's because of lack of sleep or it's just because of the multiple cleansers I've been using lately. LMAO. Probably both. I need to stop. :( Thank you so much for posting this, Elise! xx

    1. Aw it could be because of sleep, but I think using a lot of cleansers does more damage than good! Just stick to one and see how it goes :)

  4. I think diet plays a huge part in it. I have been extremely lucky as my skin is dry but almost never breaks out. I also need to wash my makeup brushes more, I only do it once a week. Eeekk!

    1. It definitely does! Aw you're lucky not to get spots, they're such a pain! To be honest I only wash mine once a week, I don't have time to do it more often!

  5. I know that washing brushes helps but its just such a bore doing it! Im also guilty of too much product, I like to try new things all the time and end up wearing way too much, I also really enjoy playing with makeup and sometimes wear it even if I'm not leaving the house. I know my skin is best when I wear minimal makeup so I try and go with concealer and powder when possible and only use foundation when I really want more coverage.

    1. It is boring, but it's kinda satisfying to see all the product and dirt coming off them! Yeah I do exactly the same, my skin loves minimal make up, but I love experimenting with all different types of things!
